A rapper caused a stir by implanting metal chains into his head, prompting warnings from experts about the dangers of such modifications.
Spanish musician Dan Sur grabbed headlines in 2021 when he shared with his millions of TikTok followers that he had replaced his hair with chains.
In a video, he explained the process: “I have it as a hook that is implanted in my head and that hook has hooks and they are all hooked in my skull, under my skin.”
“This is my hair. Golden hair. The first rapper to have gold hair implanted in human history.”
When some skeptics doubted the authenticity of his new ‘hair,’ he demonstrated that the chains did not float when placed in a glass of water, confirming they were indeed attached to his head.
Despite his satisfaction with the look, experts were quick to discourage others from following in his footsteps.
Chain hair might seem appealing, but it poses serious health risks.
In 2021, plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Agullo warned against head implants, citing their potential dangers.
He told Yahoo! News: “Implants like this are not safe. They introduce an easy path for bacteria between the outside world and the internal body. In this case, the bone covering the brain.”
“In addition, I am concerned about the amount of weight these hooks are supporting. The weight or any accidental tug on a band of gold could cause the implant to dislodge and even fracture the skull.”
Reports indicate that even when the rapper removes his chains, permanent hooks remain attached to his head.
Dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara warned that this could lead to ‘permanent hair loss from damage to the follicle’ due to inflammation and scarring of the scalp.
Despite these concerns, the rapper has been wearing the chains for three years without reporting any adverse effects.
Nevertheless, Dr. Frank Agullo cautioned, “I would strongly discourage anyone [from undergoing this procedure], for all the risks and complications involved.”
“Especially at a young age, long-term consequences need to be considered.”
“I think there are other, more sensible, and easily reversible alternatives like wearing a wig with gold chains. I don’t believe that it needs to be anchored to your skull.”
Gohara added: “Be cautious! Weave in some gold strands onto your hair. You are much better off doing that.”
Since his transplant, the rapper has been seen with various colored chains on his head, including gold, silver, and even multi-colored chains that match his outfits.
Despite numerous warnings about the risks involved, he shows no signs of abandoning this unique style anytime soon.
