Payne became famous as part of the boy band One Direction after competing on the British TV show The X Factor.
The band, which included Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan, went on to become one of the most successful boy bands in history.
Some of their well-known songs include ‘What Makes You Beautiful,’ ‘Best Song Ever,’ and ‘One Thing.’
After One Direction went on hiatus, Liam Payne signed a recording contract with Republic Records and released his single ‘Strip That Down’ in 2017.
The track, which was part of his debut album, reached number three on the U.K. Singles Chart and climbed to number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Since the band’s break, Payne amassed over 3.9 billion career streams.
Now, following the tragic news of his passing, tributes are flooding in to honor the late singer.
“So upsetting to hear the news of Liam Payne’s passing,” Paris Hilton shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Sending love and condolences to his family and loved ones. RIP my friend.”
The X-Factor duo Jedward expressed, “RIP Liam Payne. Condolences to friends and family.”
Rapper Juicy J, who worked with Payne and Wiz Khalifa on the 2016 track ‘You,’ stated: “RIP Liam Payne. Wow, I can’t believe it. Prayers up for the family.”
According to state police, Payne fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
TMZ reports that the incident happened shortly after 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Pablo Policicchio, a spokesperson for the Security Ministry of Buenos Aires Municipality, stated to AP News that police were sent to the hotel after receiving reports of an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
Buenos Aires police indicated that Payne’s fall resulted in “extremely serious injuries.”
Alberto Crescenti, the head of the state emergency medical system, mentioned that authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death and are performing an autopsy.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the fall was intentional or accidental.
Local authorities have established a cordon in the area as fans gather to pay their respects to the singer.
According to Argentinian media reports, Payne was in Buenos Aires to attend a concert by his former bandmate Horan.
Just an hour before his tragic passing, he shared a post on Snapchat outlining his plans for the day, which included playing polo, as reported by Sky News.
TMZ states that his girlfriend, Texan model Kate Cassidy, departed Argentina on October 14.
She shared a touching message about Payne in one of the last photos of him before his death.
Cassidy posted a picture of the singer riding horses in the countryside, with the caption: “I am very grateful for the simple things in life.”
Payne had a seven-year-old son, Bear Grey Payne, with his ex-girlfriend and Girls Aloud star Cheryl Tweedy, who also served as an X-Factor judge.
The singer is also survived by his parents, Geoff and Karen Payne, along with his two older sisters, Ruth and Nicola.
