Ellen DeGeneres and her family have announced that they will be leaving the United States and relocating to another country.
This marks another significant change in DeGeneres’s life, especially following her recent decision to retire from the entertainment industry.
The well-known comedian and former talk show host, who is famous for hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show for 19 seasons, revealed that her Netflix special, which was recorded on August 16, 2024, will be her final professional endeavor.
She made this announcement on the same day as her 16th wedding anniversary with Portia de Rossi, describing the occasion as “lucky and special.”
Now, DeGeneres and her family are preparing to leave the U.S. and begin their life abroad.
Ellen DeGeneres gained widespread recognition through her daytime talk show, which became popular for its mix of humor, celebrity interviews, and touching human-interest segments.
The show, however, came to an end in 2022 after reports surfaced about a toxic workplace culture, including allegations of harassment and discrimination.
Although DeGeneres herself was not directly accused of wrongdoing, the controversy had a major effect on her public image, leading her to largely step away from the spotlight in recent years.
Recently, she made a return to the public eye with Ellen’s Last Stand… Up Tour, which she confirmed would officially mark her departure from television and film.
Looking back on the highs and lows of her career, she stated, “This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.”
The controversy surrounding Ellen DeGeneres’s show first emerged in 2020, following a series of BuzzFeed exposés that accused the program of fostering a toxic workplace environment.
The reports were based on accounts from both current and former employees. One employee remarked, “That ‘be kind’ bulls**t only happens when the cameras are on. It’s all for show.”
Another commented, “It’s her responsibility to go beyond what executive producers tell her.”
DeGeneres addressed the allegations publicly, admitting that there were things that happened on the show “that should never have happened.” However, the scandal became a pivotal moment in her career, overshadowing much of her prior success.
In her stand-up performances, DeGeneres has used comedy as a way to cope with these events. Reflecting on her circumstances, she joked, “This is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business… Eventually, they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”
Despite the humor, she has also spoken openly about the emotional impact, describing the experience as “devastating” and admitting it significantly affected her self-confidence.
In addition to her career transition, Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have embraced significant changes in their personal lives.
Well-known for their passion for real estate in Montecito, California, the couple recently decided to move to the United Kingdom.
As reported by The Wrap, the relocation was influenced by former President Donald Trump’s reelection. The pair, who are said to have flipped more than 21 properties in Santa Barbara County, felt compelled to “get the hell out” following Trump’s victory.
Prior to the election, DeGeneres and de Rossi had already purchased a home in the Cotswolds, approximately two hours from London. However, Trump’s win prompted them to expedite their plans.
Even though they’ve relocated, the couple has not yet decided on a listing price for their Montecito estate.
By moving to the peaceful British countryside, they appear to be seeking a simpler, quieter life, far removed from the intense spotlight of fame.
This fresh start may also give DeGeneres an opportunity to recover and move forward from the difficulties she has faced in recent years.
“The ‘Be kind’ girl wasn’t kind,” she joked in her Netflix special, For Your Approval. “Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f*** yourselves,’ people would have been pleasantly surprised to find out I’m kind.”
