Payne became famous after appearing on The X Factor and joining the boy band One Direction with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan.
This week, the sad news of his death shocked everyone, and more details have continued to emerge since then.
Now, Payne’s father has received even more heartbreaking news.
The cause of Liam Payne’s death is still being investigated.
A post-mortem revealed that he died from multiple injuries consistent with a fall from 45 feet.
The tragedy happened at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in the Palermo district, where Payne was staying.
Although the autopsy confirmed how he died, authorities are still calling the case “inconclusive” as they wait for further toxicology results, according to MailOnline.
Prosecutors are looking into whether drugs were involved, and forensic experts are examining mobile phones, computers, photos, and security footage from the hotel.
A hotel manager had called emergency services shortly before the incident, saying a guest was “off his head on drugs and destroying everything in his room.”
In a second call, the manager said they were worried the guest might be in a life-threatening situation because the room had a balcony.
Argentine authorities are continuing to gather statements from hotel staff, acquaintances, and medical professionals who were connected to Liam in the hours before he died.
They are also analyzing items found at the scene, including white powder on a desk in Liam’s hotel room, which is still being tested.
So far, there is no evidence pointing to anyone else being involved in his death.
Prosecutors think Payne may have fallen from the balcony while in a “semi or total unconsciousness” state, possibly due to a drug-induced psychotic episode.
Liam’s father, Geoff Payne, 66, met with Prosecutor Madrea and expressed his desire for a transparent investigation. He even offered to testify about any details of his son’s life that might help.
Due to the high-profile nature of Liam’s death, Madrea offered Geoff police protection while he was in Argentina.
Geoff also visited the hotel where Liam’s fatal fall occurred.
Meanwhile, fans have been honoring Liam. A vigil was held outside the hotel, and in Manchester, flowers and photos of Payne with his One Direction bandmates were left at a memorial.
One touching tribute read, “Payno forever 31,” while others formed heart-shaped candles to remember him.
But Geoff Payne has received even more heartbreaking news: he will have to wait 10 days before his son’s body can be flown back to the UK.
Liam’s father traveled to Argentina to formally identify his son and is now facing the painful task of bringing him home, while the investigation continues.
Geoff visited the morgue where his son’s body is being held and met with officials from Argentina’s Ministry of Justice.
Prosecutor Andrés Esteban Madrea, who is leading the investigation, told Geoff that it could take up to 10 days to complete the toxicology and histopathology tests before Liam’s body can be released.
Despite the painful uncertainty, Geoff has promised not to return to the UK without his son’s remains.
A family friend told MailOnline, “Geoff has been told it might take ten days for the tests to be completed and for him to take Liam home. He is finding the whole situation really tough. Geoff is totally heartbroken at losing his son.”
