Miley Cyrus Stays Out Of Family Drama Amid Brother’s Tension With Dad Billy Ray

Miley Cyrus is staying out of the recent drama in her family.

A source told PEOPLE that the 32-year-old singer doesn’t want any arguments with her loved ones. This comes after her brother, Trace Cyrus, shared concerns about their dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, following his performance at President Donald Trump’s inaugural events earlier this week.

“Miley used to feel overwhelmed by the family drama. She worked hard to remove herself. She’s not about to get involved again,” the insider says.

“She’s in a great place now. She’s thriving and looking out for herself,” the source adds. Miley is nominated for an award at the 2025 Grammys for her work on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album.

Miley has openly talked about her complicated relationship with her dad in recent months.

In June 2024, during an interview with David Letterman on his Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, she shared the good and bad lessons she learned from her father, Billy Ray, 63.

Months later, in a November 2024 cover story interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Miley talked about working with those closest to her and mentioned her dad, saying, “I worked with my dad forever.”

As for the “Angels Like You” musician’s relationship with her mom, Tish Cyrus, a source tells PEOPLE, “She has a great relationship with her mom. She’s happy her mom is doing well too.”

The Cyrus family drama started after Billy Ray performed at The Liberty Ball during Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

During his performance of “Achy Breaky Heart” and his Lil Nas X collaboration “Old Town Road,” the country star faced technical issues.

The next day, Billy Ray told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement that it was an “honor” to perform at the event. He repeated those feelings in an Instagram post on January 22.

A source recently told PEOPLE that Billy Ray’s voice “has changed, and he’s been really insecure about it.” They added that performing at the Trump event was the Hannah Montana alum “putting himself in a vulnerable situation.”

On January 22, Trace — who Billy Ray adopted in 1993 after marrying his now ex-wife Tish — shared an emotional letter on Instagram, voicing concerns about his father.

“It seems this world has beaten you down and it’s become obvious to everyone but you. You may be upset with me for posting this but I really could care less at this point,” Trace, 35, wrote, in part.

Trace also appeared to mention his sisters Miley, Noah, and Brandi Cyrus — who Billy Ray adopted in 1993 — saying that they are all “genuinely worried” about their dad. Trace also said their father has “pushed” them all away. (Billy Ray also has a son, Christopher Cody Cyrus, with ex-girlfriend Kristin Luckey, and a son, Braison Cyrus, with Tish, 57, whom he divorced in 2022.)

“We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns. You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it,” Trace wrote. He ended with: “I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly but I think I have a pretty good idea & I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help. You know how to reach me. Till that day comes I will continue to pray for you.”

Despite all the ups and downs, a source close to the Cyrus family recently told PEOPLE that Miley, her siblings, and her mom want to put the tension behind them.

“They got through the drama of 2024, and it’s a new year,” the insider explained. “Miley and Noah and Braison and Tish, they don’t want to be part of this Cyrus family feud. This is not enjoyable for them.”
