Guy Fieri has tried all sorts of foods, from duck tongue tacos to a seafood totem pole, so it’s hard to believe he has any food dislikes. But the famous restaurant owner and host of “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” has shared that he dislikes one particular ingredient. It’s not something special from the places he’s visited. Instead, it’s a common food. Fieri says he has what’s called “egg ick.”
Fieri’s dislike of eggs started when he was young. He told My Recipes that when he was 10, he learned about the life cycle of a chicken after opening an egg and finding a whole bird inside. Surprisingly, that didn’t bother him. His dislike began because of one overcooked hard-boiled egg. Fieri said the yolk had a dry, chalky texture, and that was enough to put him off eggs. Even today, he’s okay with foods that contain eggs, like Caesar salad dressing, which traditionally has raw egg yolks. But that dry yolk made him avoid omelets and scrambled eggs for life.
Fieri’s Egg Aversion Hasn’t Kept Him From His Passions
Fieri’s dislike of eggs hasn’t stopped him from following his passions. One good thing that came from his childhood experience with eggs is his interest in raising animals. Even though he doesn’t like eating eggs, Fieri raises chickens and goats at his home in Northern California. He’s a big supporter of sustainable practices and tries to reduce his environmental impact by using organic farming methods. His chickens eat all-natural ingredients, and he even feeds them scraps from his garden. “We take all of our scraps from our garden and then go over the fence to the chickens and it changes the yolk, the flavor, everything,” Fieri told My Recipes (via Daily Meal). He also said that buying non-organic eggs from the store felt like going behind the backs of his chickens.
When it comes to filming his show, eggs are clearly something Guy Fieri just can’t eat. In a season 14 episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, guest chef Andrew Zimmern served Fieri a white pizza with sunny eggs on top at Pizzeria Lola in Minneapolis. Fieri chose not to eat it. Since it’s his job to try all kinds of food, Fieri doesn’t mind eating eggs when they’re hidden in a recipe. But when it comes to scrambled, hard-boiled, grilled, or poached eggs, the chef told the Tampa Bay Times, “That’s just not the way I like to party.”
